Tool determines whether box is genuine

Lünen, 18. June 2010. Dream Multimedia, the leading provider of Linux-based set-top boxes, is proceeding actively against illegally produced and distributed Dreambox copies, so-called clones. The company provides a verification system on its homepage for honest purchasers of a Dreambox.

The Dreambox models DM8000 HD PVR and DM800 HD PVR as well as DM500 HD and DM600 PVR come equipped with a Genuine Tool, which can be used to generate a code. The user can enter the code at www.dream-multimedia-tv.de/en/authenticity-test. He will then receive feedback as to whether he has an original Dream Multimedia box or a clone. Should he have acquired a clone, the buyer could take action against the merchant.

Dream Multimedia cooperates with the police, state attorneys and leading online platforms such as Ebay in an endeavour to prevent the distribution of clones. Great success was achieved in this project last year, leading to confiscations and convictions.

The cheap, low-quality imitations do not provide the high level of performance of the original Dreamboxes. Vendors of clones are simply out to grab money from unsuspecting customers with supposedly inexpensive offers.

Dream spokesperson Alpaslan Karasu: „The verification system provides genuine, honest Dreambox customers with the necessary security regarding their purchase. People who knowingly buy a clone are saving at the wrong end. These cheap copies often break down, and Dreambox naturally provides guarantee services only for original equipment.“
